Getting your license introduction

In order to get your riders license you will be required to complete a pre-learner practical riding course for two consecutive half days. The centre will provide the bike or scooter and a helmet and this is included in the $72 fee. The Honda owned HART centre at St Ives is the local centre for those living on the north shore and nothern beaches. Alternatively, there are multiple centres across and just outside of Sydney. It is very important to book in as early as you can for the pre-learner course as they can be booked out up to 6 weeks in advance. Bookings can be made online via the rta website and looking for cancellation slots can be a good way of getting in faster.

The pre-learner course is followed by a 45 question knowledge test at the rta. This qualifies you with a learners permit which means you can ride solo on a learner approved bike or scooter up to 80km/h.

The L's license which must be held for a minimum of 3 months is followed by a provisional licensing period and then a full unrestricted license. For riders over 25 years old with a full car license they only required to hold their P's for 1 year. For all other riders they must hold their red p's for 1 year and green p's for an addtional 2 years before qualifying for a full license. Riders are not permitted to carry a pillion passenger while holding a l's or p's license.
